Have you noticed clicking or popping sounds in your jaw? It might seem harmless, but it’s often a sign of something happening within your jaw joint (TMJ).
Your TMJ contains a tiny cushion called the articulating disc. This disc, held in place by ligaments, acts like a shock absorber, ensuring smooth, pain-free movement during chewing, talking, and other jaw motions.
What Causes the Popping Sound?
When your jaw clicks or pops, it usually means the disc has shifted out of its proper position. Instead of moving smoothly with the condyle (the rounded part of your jawbone), the disc can get trapped in front of it. As the disc tries to return to its natural position, it may momentarily squeeze between the bone surfaces, producing that clicking sound.
As long as the disc stays intact and hasn’t changed shape, it will keep trying to align correctly. However, if the clicking sound starts to fade, it could indicate the disc is becoming deformed or thinner, preventing it from returning to its correct position.
What Happens When the Disc Stays Misaligned?
When the disc is unable to return to its position, the condyle adapts to the new alignment. Over time, the condyle can press harder on the surrounding tissues behind the disc. This pressure can cut off blood supply and nerve signals, leading to tissue atrophy and reduced vertical space between your upper and lower jaws.
This misalignment doesn’t just disrupt smooth jaw motion—it can also affect how your teeth come together, leading to discomfort, chewing difficulties, and other symptoms that can impact your daily life.
